"Without the potato, the balance of European power might never have tilted north." Michael Pollan
To increase awareness about John Clarke and our potato heritage plus the nutritional value of potatoes, pupils from local primary schools plant seed potatoes at Innisfree Farm guided by the National Trust Conservation Officer Cliff Henry. This is an annual educational feature of the Northern Ireland Potato Festival. At the end of the season they return to harvest their crop, share them out and take them home to eat. The scene at harvest time, the excitement and joy at finding a potato in the earth is parallel to an adult finding a nugget of gold. The event also conveys how healthy the potato really is as a food.
